4afe Distributor Wiring Diagram – I got this great Alltrace from a good friend who said he was driving it one day and it stalled, he somehow decided it was the fuel pump, he basically installed a new one but ended up with other projects. distracted him. I pulled the ignition coils from the new and old distributors and found them to be low (0.8 on both primary coils, 8k on the secondary. My research says it’s 1.1-1.4 on the primary and 9 on the secondary -should be 15k..)

Ordered a new coil from Amazon, it shows the same 0.8 ohms across the primary coil but 13k across the secondary. I thought I’d give it a try anyway, but still no spark. I don’t know if I should try the 4th herb or the new (3rd) distributor. I want to check everything first, at this point. A friend of mine said he never had a problem with this new distributor and the new coil looked very close to the old one, although they were not in the range I found with my multimeter.

I checked every fuse I could find, including the 3 big guns on the pos battery cable, both banks of fuses under the hood, and the drivers panel.

The jumper on the fuel pump terminal on the diagnostic port turns the pump on and after screwing it in a few times when i check for spark i can smell the fuel.

When the engine is running, the rotor rotates and the cover is removed from the distributor. Timing is not important, but I need to figure out how to remove this belt cover for inspection.

I got all the lights that should come on when I try to start – battery, brake, check engine, oil pressure, seat belt.

Can I try these other relays before buying another distributor? Is there anything else like this? Am I overlooking something simple?

It helps to know what year you have with the All-Trac. The engine seemed to stall after changing the distributor and I don’t think it would start after that. You always try to understand what was done before the problem, then go back to previous times when something was done or something happened.

The old distributor cap had markings on the 4 pins on each plug wire and he said he replaced it because it was running rough, but after the replacement it drove for a while with no problems.

It may have been a spark problem from the start, but he claims he drove the car at this dealership for a while with no problems, so it wasn’t bad out of the box, even though it was long gone.

I replaced it once, although the new one showed less resistance across the primary coil than the book I read.

If the verdict is the distributor, I’ll order a third one, but if there’s a way to check the efi or main relay or some other roadblock like that, I’ll do it first if possible. Distributors aren’t cheap and money is tight :/

Pull out any OBD1 diagnostic trouble codes and start from there. You should jump out the DLC (E1 to TE1) in the engine compartment and read that the check engine light flashes with the key in the ON position, engine OFF. Return with any error codes. If you have a compression gauge, check the compression on all 4 cylinders. I know you said no spark, but when these Corollas sit for so long, anything and everything is suspect, especially if someone had “issues” before you gave it away. Remember – An engine needs four things to run: FUEL, AIR, SPARK and COMMUNICATION.

For now we’ll assume your time zone is on and the correct time is set when the distributor rotates when the cap is off. A compression test will tell you if the timing is correct without pulling the cap back. Removing the engine mount and attaching the engine is a time-consuming task on the 1.6L, so let’s do the easy stuff first.

Also, disconnect the high tension wires and make sure they are all within specification, read from the distributor cap of the inner connector to the end of the spark plug wire. Maximum resistance is 25 Kohm per wire / cap. If the resistance is more than 25K, check the terminals for corrosion and replace the wire cap and IIA (distributor) if necessary. They are sold as a complete (integrated) unit for the 1.6L, so if your spark plug wires can detach from the distributor cap, they are not OEM/equivalent parts.

Also check for +12vdc battery voltage to the coil input at the distributor connector. If that connector doesn’t have +12vdc, go back to the battery to find it and repair it. The coil resistance readings should be: Primary 1.28 ohm – 1.56 ohm and Secondary 10.4 kohm – 14.0 kohm. Make sure you’re using a quality meter, and if you’re not using an auto-calibrated DVOM, set the resistance range correctly. The NE and G1 air gaps inside the distributor are also important in the operation of the 1.6 liter ignition system. They are measured with a feeler gauge (brass) and should not exceed 0.2 to 0.4 mm. They act as crankshaft position and rotational speed source signals.

Side note: Pulling the EFI 15A fuse in the engine compartment will erase all stored ECM DTCs, so be careful when trying to read MIL DTCs, because if you want the codes to reset, you have to drive after that fainting. This fuse has the same effect as removing the negative terminal of the car battery. If this fuse is blown or missing, your car won’t start or the spark plugs won’t fire, so check this fuse first, as well as all other ignition fuses, before you start troubleshooting the idle. ring.
