The first thing you need to do is print out the Christmas lights template. You can use a larger or smaller template depending on how you view the door. For the example you see above, I used a large pattern.

I would definitely recommend printing a white card stock template. Card stock is more durable than standard printer paper and is a little better if you keep track of the patterns.

Once you’ve printed out the template, cut out the pattern and start tracing it on various pieces of construction paper.

Note: After drawing all the bulbs, I cut out the tops of the bulbs and traced them onto black construction paper. Then I glued that top sheet over the bulb.

Next, you can make a “rope” using black tape, real yarn, or in my case, I used black pipe cleaners. I wanted to give the door a little more texture and I think it works well.

With tape, you can draw lines on the door and tape the lamps with a roll of tape. Using a pipe cleaner, I taped them to the shape I wanted and then taped the bulbs to hide them.

Another option is to cover the entire door with paper. This would be a great classroom door! Then you can use a marker or paint to make a string and tape or glue the bulb to the top. The possibilities are truly endless!
