Ruby Neal Bridges Hall is an American civil rights activist. He is 67 years old at the time of this writing. He went to primary school at the same time as my parents. On November 14, 1960, he was the first African-American child to walk out of the white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis. It is important that our children understand that slavery and Jim Crow were generations ago. There is still work to be done. A true pioneer of gender and race, Shirley Chisholm became the first black woman to represent New York’s 12th Congressional District. In 1972, she became the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. During her time in Congress, Chisholm fought for education, health and human services, and women’s rights. Rosa Parks (1913–2005) started the civil rights movement in the United States in 1955 when she refused to give way to a white man on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Rosa Parks didn’t do it “on the spot” as many have taught, her actions were premeditated. Rosa Parks was brave and stood up for what she believed in. The move prompted local black leaders to boycott the Montgomery bus. Pastor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. the boycott lasted more than a year, during which Parks, not coincidentally, lost his job and only ended when the US Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional. Parks have become national symbols of status and power in the struggle to end racial discrimination.

In 1862, during the Civil War, Robert Smalls commandeered a Confederate transport ship to free himself, his crew, and his family. Smalls was later elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. Robert Smalls was also instrumental in getting President Lincoln to allow free blacks to serve in the Union Army.
