Exterior Paint Blue Roof What Color To Paint House – It depends, according to experts who say color selection should be based on factors such as your home’s style, landscape, neighborhood, roof color and stone.
Red might be your all-time favorite color, but if your house’s brick facade is bright pink, it’s smart to paint it a different color. And just because all the latest home decor magazines are predicting that blue will be the color of the year in 2013 (and it is), that doesn’t mean it will be right for your home.

“Exterior paint choices are less influenced by trends than fashion or even interior paint choices,” says Krim Danzinger, senior consultant at AkzoNobel, maker of Glidden paints.
Picking Exterior Paint Colors: 4 Things To Know
Good stuff After all, an exterior paint job is the kind of expensive project that most homeowners only look forward to once every decade.
“When you paint the interior of your home, you have the luxury of being bolder with color. It’s a way to communicate your uniqueness to people you know enough to invite into your home,” says Barbara Richardson, Color Marketing Director at AkzoNobel. “But when we talk about the exterior, we have to look at the community you’re a part of. You have to look around you and the other houses on your street. There’s a sense of camaraderie you want to have with your neighbors. If the color of your house clashes with theirs , it will distract from the whole street.”
Getting Started When you’re trying to decide on a color to paint your house, Richardson advises studying homes in neighborhoods you admire. Take pictures of color combinations you like, both indoors and in clothes, wallpaper or fabric. Do your research. If you live in an elegant Victorian craftsman or stately home, do you know how these houses are traditionally painted in your part of the country? Are you inspired by any of these historic color combinations?
Then, after spending some time narrowing down your options, buy a pint of several different paints and test them around your house. How does it look next to your stone fireplace? How does it look in the morning or at night?
Exterior Paint Colors For House With Brown Roof
Leatrice Eiseman, head of the Eiseman Color Information and Education Center and executive director of the Pantone® Color Institute, says the neighborhood shouldn’t be overlooked when choosing exterior paint, either.
The color of your neighbor’s house should help inform your palette. Is your home warm (beige, pink, brown, gold, yellow) or cool (gray, blue, green, teal)? You need to choose a color that matches the other houses on your block.
Match location and architecture “San Francisco is full of ‘Painted Ladies’, Victorian houses painted in bold combinations of mauve, mulberry and mauve. It’s bright and unusual and fits perfectly,” says Richardson. “A similar style house in a more conservative area, say Dubuque, Iowa, might be painted white or pale yellow. It’s appropriate for the region.
“In the Bahamas, you can see dozens of blue houses with bright yellow or green shutters,” he continued. “On the contrary, there are probably only a handful of blue houses in all of Tempe, Arizona. Blue is not a big color there.”
Exterior Paint Color Schemes
“Think in small doses,” suggests Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “Color can be added to your exterior in the same way that you use pillows or wallpaper to add color to your interior.
“If you paint your whole house bright red, it might stick out like a sore thumb,” he says. “But by painting your door red, you can show your personality without everyone in the neighborhood wondering, ‘Oh my God, what was I thinking?’
“Never say never,” Eiseman said. “I might not paint the house black, but black trim can work well. It all depends on what colors you mix and how much you use.” When we buy a house, we can’t always choose the color of the first house we buy, especially when we buy it blind. Poor Little It Girl’s Cathy Peshek was able to demonstrate how The Home Depot’s ProjectColor app can transform the exterior of her home into the color of her dreams.
I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since I appeared on BRAVO’s Buying It Blind! People always ask about our sight unseen home buying experience, and honestly, it was a lot of fun. We still love our home and plan to spend as many years here as possible. Although small (about 1650 square feet), our first house gave us all the space we needed plus a garden for Bowie. Our neighbors are nice and there is so much development in our area, I can’t wait to see how much things change in the next few years.
How To Match Roof Shingles To House Color: 12 Considerations
But, there’s something about this house that really drives me crazy. And that is the exterior paint color. As soon as I walked into the front yard, I knew the condition of this paint color needed to be fixed. With a large tree in front and centered on our lot, the house is almost lost behind it. The day we moved in, I said to Adam “We need to paint this house!” so finally a year later i did it!
The original beige brown color of our house looks very blah and like I said, it gets lost behind the big trees. It took a full year, but we were finally able to paint the exterior of our house with the help of Home Depot. What seemed like a daunting task turned out to be easier than I imagined! So let’s get started.
Before working with The Home Depot on this project, Adam and I spent hours researching potential paint colors for our home. As you can imagine, this is literally a million options. Since this is a pretty big decision (hello, we’re painting the whole house!), we want to make sure we pick the best color for us and our house.
We ended up using the ProjectColor app that Home Depot offers to finalize the exterior paint color. In the app, you can take a photo of your home and “test” the color to see what the final product will look like. Seriously, how cool! After trying a bunch of different colors (from blue, gray and even green) I chose Behr Cold Steel (MQ5-20). I love how the teal comes out on the big green tree with the white trim and the peachy pink door.

Once the colors were finalized, we had to find a painter! We researched online to find the right company in our area to help us complete the project. Day 1 was spent pressure washing the house and getting it ready for painting. The second day was the big day where they painted the entire exterior. It only takes a few hours and that’s all, the effect is immediate!
Not to brag, but my little blue house is so cute, isn’t it?! Curb appeal has been improved 100% and my house looks much more cheerful. I love how the green leaves on the tree really pop with the blue. Honestly, I’m obsessed!
But let’s face it, a house is never “done”. There are already a few more things to do on my wish list to complete the exterior of our home. We want to renovate our porch/deck safely. We also want to get a new front door and add some plants. As we move forward in a few years, I hope that by this time next year all those additional projects will be completed.
If you’re thinking about painting the exterior (or interior) of your home, start at The Home Depot. Their ProjectColor app ensures we find the best color for our home. It’s great to be able to visualize what the final product will look like.
