Fender 57/62 Pickups Wiring Diagram – Identifying a Fender pickup is sometimes easy or difficult. These pages are definitely a labor of love! I try to cover all NEW Fender pickups, not the older ones that came out in the 50’s and 80’s. In my opinion, dealing with these old pickups is a total game of “it’s too expensive, it could be fake, it’s hard to tell, and it’s anyone’s guess.” It’s not worth wasting time digging into the past, because there are great Fender pickups available today, both used and new. Fenders usually don’t have the “tuned” look of a pickup, and often don’t have a numbering scheme or other unique identifier written on the pickup. The best way to identify them is often a combination of appearance and measurements. This means that some pickups, such as silent ones, are very easy to identify, while others can be difficult. Subs, wires and such make it a total detective project at times as Fender used all the pickups on the guitars in some cases so MIM could show up with the best pickups or test work etc. Big picture information

Most of the time, the numbers on the back of a pickup mean something if they’re written in ink. But keep in mind that Fender made a LOT of pickups and used to reissue them in different models with different SKUs, so if you find a model that the numbers just don’t match, email me and I’ll try to get one for you. help.

To top it off, be VERY careful with double-tap Fender humbuckers (and some other humbuckers – extra quiet). If you think the soldering posts are not giving you a reading. This is what you could end up with… if you’re not careful the wires are thin and covered in tape that will tear them. Be warned. Probes are the best way to test at the station, but measuring the wires is best. If you have to resolder the wire, be VERY careful not to break the existing wire coming from the post.

This page is only about Fender Humbuckers. I’ve been focusing on the new ones, but it’s starting to expand to include SOME older Fender Humbuckers. Although Fender really didn’t make that many humbuckers, they sometimes shared the name, and they’re all pretty decent or great. (Though they have their detractors). Fender also had Stratocaster models that used Seymour Duncans, most notably the Pearly Gates in the early 2000s.

GOTCHES! One of the downsides to identifying humbuckers is that the bottom end is used over and over again, and in most cases it’s not a great indicator of the sound and their design. The wire colors seem to match the new pickups very well, so it’s not really unique. Another big problem is that many of them don’t have identification numbers on the bottom. The third problem is that if they have a number, sometimes you have no idea what the number means. The fourth problem is that Fender sometimes gave the SAME pickup a different name (eg Enforcer vs. Atomic, Hot Rod DH-1), so metering is one of the BEST identification features in many cases. The rest is just marketing. As usual, measuring would be a good way to figure them out, but heck, it’s about 8K everywhere – so if it’s about 8K, it’s a DH-1, Twin Head, etc., etc.

Fortunately, some of them have fixed numbers or specific-looking “settings”, especially on later models.

A WORD about part numbers: Usually a wing has a long part number, leading and trailing zeros mean nothing. The important part code is the 5 digit code in the middle and often the last 2 or 3 digits can be found on a black marker on the back of the truck. Sometimes they never observed them. The part code is the same code you will find on the retail packaging. They often re-released the same pickup with a different part number. But, another but, sometimes the number on the truck means something else that we don’t know about!!

FINALLY – Fender moves their pickups around all the time, so if you don’t mind if the DCR difference between the same numbered pickup is 8% or more, they tend to average out.

GOOD LUCK! Here’s what I’ve learned so far (subject to change!) – The date of my last change, when I remembered to change it, is at the bottom.

Diamond Back is the standard base. However, I have noticed that Diamondbacks often have 64 under, possibly the center number in the manufacturer’s code. It is recommended for HSS configuration, which means it is not a high output humbucker. They were produced from 1998 on the American Fat Strat until 2003 with TekMek single coil positions. I think in 2012 they switched to DiamondBack with the fat 50’s. This is a decent pickup that shines with pickups like the 57/62 etc. It sounds warmer, like a midrange bite. Download is preferred.

I personally like these pickups and they are VERY easy to spot. There are TWO versions of the Twin Head pickup. They use a 3-pin connector on the back. If you buy one of these, make sure you get a cable so you don’t have to find it on an electrical parts site (good luck trying to waste time looking for it, but they do exist)! Note that it says TH-MD N – the “N” stands for the neck pickup. “B” would mean bridge. It also has 2 versions. This is the modern version. The modern version is warmer, higher DCR. They can still occasionally be found as NOS.

The DH-1 and Atomic were on the American Deluxe HSS but wait, also on the MIM but wait..which guitar was NOT used on those?? And what is their real name? Basically known as the DH-1 is the Alnico 5. The DH-1 was a very good Fender pickup. A typical measurement is 8.2-8.7K

Atomic pickups are a GREAT example of heavy use and a LOT of different “sku” numbers, and to make matters worse, they seem to have both a VINTAGE and OVERWOUND version, finally, the number on the bottom often doesn’t match the SKU number. . Atomics have appeared on many guitars, but one of them was the Fender Tornado circa 1998. They usually have a BLUE or BLACK plastic wire. There is a lot of conflict about which is the bridge and which is the neck, but on the retail packaging the neck is BLUE.

How to identify: The easiest way to identify them is what guitars they came from, what they measured, and what the number is (in a wild exchange, it matches the ones listed here). The blue string is also a little unusual for a Fender, so that might help.

Shavbucker 2 is more powerful than Shavbucker 1 – Shavbucker 1 is recommended for HSS and Shavbucker 2 is recommended for HH configurations. Fender still sells them as of May 2020

Not much information. I know they were released as a pair of HH Stratocasters. It is dated 2005. But it is not very popular. They have very high power, which means they are very dark pickups. I wouldn’t spend anything under 500k on it.

The black cobra number is 65290 (the important part is 290, the wing sometimes skips the first 2 digits, which is usually 65.

DCR: black cobra: output is around 15.6k? (The literature I’ve read says it’s actually ATOMIC DCR: 16K)

American Standard single coil pickups were actually Tek Mek pickups until 2013 when they were replaced by Fat 50s.

WARNING:!! – Dual Tap Humbuckers have posts that go into the pickup coil and glue the coils around them. If you cut the little wires that go to the posts, put clips on the pickup body, or re-solder them, you’ll probably have the pickup in the room unless you plan to rewire it.
