He also dressed her in a dress of different colors. 4 But when his brothers saw that his father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not tell him: 5 Joseph had a dream and told it to his brothers. And they hate him even more. 6 Then Jesus said to them: “Listen to this dream that I dreamed: 7 Behold, we are bound in the field. Behold, my brother-in-law is lifted up and he stands upright; my flock.’

8 And his brothers said to him: Will you be king over us? Or will you rule us?’ So they hated him more and more because of his dreams and words.

10 He told this to his father and brother. His father scolded him and said: “What dream did you see?” Will your mother and I and your brother come and bow down to you?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father remembered it.

In sequence, Joseph’s story begins with a statement that shows his special place in his father’s house: “Now Israel loves Joseph more than all his children. Because he is his firstborn son” (Genesis 37:3).

Joseph was seventeen years old when the story begins. Joseph’s place in his father’s house was special because he was the eldest son of his beloved wife Raquel, a woman whom Jacob loved more than his sister Leah, his first wife.

Jacob’s favoritism caused resentment between Joseph and his brother. The text gives two main reasons for the negative feelings of Joseph’s brothers towards him.

Please Listen To This Dream”—the Story Of Joseph And His Brothers

The first reason is that Joseph informed his father about what his brothers had done: “And Joseph told his father about the evil that his brothers had done” (Genesis 37:2). his brother to do great evil to his father” (Genesis 37, 2 DRA).

The second reason the brothers hated Joseph was because he was Jacob’s favorite son: “And now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons” (Genesis 37:3) It is possible that Jacob saw something in Joseph that distinguishes him from the rest. sons.

Perhaps Jacob loved Jose so much because of his great love for Raquel, Jose’s mother. However, this flattery did not go well with his other sons: “Joseph’s brothers saw that their father loved him more than anything else. They hated Joseph and did not befriend him” (Genesis 37:4).

Jacob expressed his love and affection to Joseph by giving him a special garment: “a garment of many colors” (Genesis 37:3) This garment gave Joseph a distinction his brothers denied. his brothers hate him and he made Joseph angry with his brothers.

Joseph And The Coat Of Many Colors

The character of Joseph’s clothing is the focus of many arguments and disputes. The popular imagination sees Joseph’s clothing as Technicolor, a concept that spawned the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

However, it is doubtful whether the clothes that Jacob gave Joseph were his color. The idea that Joseph’s robe was of many colors comes from a mistranslation of the Septuagint (LXX).

Lancelot CL Brenton’s English translation of the Septuagint renders Genesis 37:3 as follows: “Jacob loved Joseph among all his sons, because he had an older son; and he made him which is a garment of many colors” (Genesis 37:3). This translation was adopted by the Vulgate, and Jerome’s Latin translation of the Bible. The King James Bible is based on the Septuagint to translate the Hebrew words “coat of many colors”.

The Hebrew words behind the word “cloth of many colors” are katon passim, a word whose meaning is unknown. English translations vary depending on how it is translated

We Can Learn Much From The Life Of Joseph The Dreamer

These different translations of the two Hebrew words show that there is no agreement among scholars about the meaning of this phrase. These two words appear again in 2 Samuel 13:18 to describe the special clothing worn by the daughters of kings: “Tamar wore a long robe with sleeves; .

Used in this context, versions render these two words as they appear in Genesis 37:3.

EA Speiser, in his commentary on Genesis, relies on Mesopotamian literature to explain the meaning of this phrase. he wrote:

Wedge notes give this outfit some light. Among the different types of clothing mentioned in the texts, there is a type called kityu pishannu. What is important here is, in addition to close foreign correspondence with the Jews. phrase, the article thus described is a ceremonial garment that surrounds the images of the gods and is embroidered with various golden ornaments (1964: 290).

Therefore, translations that use the words “decorated robe” (NIV) or “decorated tunic” (NJB) are consistent with Speiser’s suggestion. Versions that translate the Hebrew words as “long sleeves” follow the Jewish tradition of understanding the word.

Speiser’s claim that Mesopotamian religious traditions can explain the two Hebrew words is based on A. Leo Oppenheim’s article “The Golden Garments of the Gods”.

8 (1949): 172-193. Oppenheim made his point in a discussion of the clothes used to dress the images of the gods.

Q. Kyle McCarter, in his commentary on 2 Samuel, rejects Speiser’s view because of the difficulty of matching Mesopotamian clothing with the clothing mentioned in Genesis 37 and 2 Samuel 13.

Christian Mythology For Kids

It means ‘a cloak that reaches to the feet’, i.e. hands or feet, because it is plural and not dual, hence ‘a long robe with arms”.

Apparently this is a type of dress worn by royal women, this dress probably belonged to the royal family, high officials of the palace or people with a high social status.

This means that Jacob regarded Joseph as a royal person, one that he considered superior to his other sons.

What about Joseph’s clothing of different colors, like a “long robe with sleeves”, like the clothes worn by kings? This phrase became so ingrained in the minds of Christians everywhere that it was impossible to convince them that Joseph had no Technicolor clothes.
