Menards Gray Paint Colors

Menards Gray Paint Colors – Stripes are one of my biggest obsessions. You see them in our house and in my living room. They are definitely my favorite pattern! However, it was time for me to paint over the stripes in our guest room so that I could create a more neutral space that allowed me to use other interesting patterns and fabrics.

But let me back up. I painted a striped wall in the master bedroom of our last house. I used two colors next to each other in the color bar and I really liked the result. When we moved into our current home five years ago, I wanted the rugs elsewhere because I loved them so much. I finally decided to paint our master guest bedroom. This place appeared a few weeks ago.

Look! And I know some of you are surprised that I drew lines 🙂 But I added them in July 2013 (can you believe that was four years ago?!?) and I was ready for a change. . I like stripes more than other patterns. But over time the stripes on the walls limited the stripes I could use on the fabric. In fact, I realized that some of the patterns in the room didn’t look right because of the walls. I don’t like the white and gray contrast. It felt too modern for my current aesthetic.

How To Paint Over Striped Walls Tutorial

Towards the end of summer, I decided to start spinning stripes. It’s an option I’ve been thinking about for a while, but I know it will take a lot of work. I know what you’re thinking, “Can’t we just paint/prime them?” In short, it is not necessary. I will give all the details soon.

But before I started looking at stripes, I first wanted to find the perfect neutral paint color for the space. Because of my love of dresses and throw pillows, I wanted a color that would mix and match beige as well as greens. I don’t want to commit to a project until I have a more concrete plan and a concrete color. So I went to Menards and picked up some Dutch Boy paint samples. I used this paint line in my Buffalo Chic laundry room and decided to use it again because I was so happy with the product.

I’ve narrowed my choices down to the following five bands (light colors on each). Stripes are placed on the front of the headboard fabric in the guest bedroom.

If you look closely, all the colors are the same, but each has its own unique shades. I fell in love with the Existence (420-1DB) because it has a perfect low end (slightly green/yellowish) but has the inspired warm neutral tone I was looking for. I’ve been running it around our house to compare it to some of our existing colors and it’s a clear winner!

Over the past few weeks, when I’ve been suggesting painting over plastered walls, many people have asked me why I plaster walls. Many people think it’s as simple as primer and/or paint in strips and primer in one. However, when you use masking tape to create a pattern, you end up with a ridge on the edge where the two colors meet. It may not always be present in every version. But if you think about it, 1-2 more colors per coat and it might not seem like much, but when you go back to the same color, the lips are sheer. Below you will find additional information and images.

I decided to use this section between the closet door and the bathroom door as my test section. He helped a lot. Not only did I find that sanding by hand wouldn’t cut it, but it also allowed me to test the color on a small spot on the wall if I didn’t like it. The last thing you want to do on a project of this size is redo an entire room, find it doesn’t fit, and then redo your work. With this short test section, I was able to try a few methods to see what worked best for my situation.

As with any paint job, you’ll want to do some basic prep work. This includes filling any existing nail holes you want to remove and removing the outlet cover. You can see in the picture above that my pores were filled and treated before I moved on to the next step.

I recommend wearing a protective sanding mask along with safety glasses before starting this step (and any subsequent sanding steps). If you’re lucky, you can get away with manual sanding or none at all. However, it quickly became clear in my case that manual sanding wouldn’t help either.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t completely apparent to the eye until I applied a test coat of paint. In the hand sanding process, I tried two different grits of paper and found that 180 or a little less worked best. Here’s how the wall looked with light paint, then a coat of paint. In the image below, you can see that the color coverage is good, but the lines between the bands are too sharp. The good news: I loved the color!

Seeing as the stripes weren’t completely covered, I decided to use my electric sander for the rest of the room.

For me, I find that sanding the spine is a happy medium until I start wearing off the top layer of putty. You can see what I’m doing in the picture below. For my striped wall, gray was my base color and white I added on top later. So I sanded until some grain was visible. You can usually tell with your hands if the spine is missing. And when you think it’s done, pull some more. The extra work is worth your time!

If your strips require sanding, after you sand and/or prepare the walls, you should thoroughly clean the surface before painting. Sanding is a messy project and you need to make sure the paint sticks to a clean surface! I cleaned all the walls, cleaned all the baseboards and vacuumed the room. After this project I also had to pick every leaf on the fig tree!

I applied two coats of Dutch Boy Paints Existence (420-1DB) using their Platinum Plus Interior Paint + Primer. I found the coverage to be great and streak free! The color turned out better than I expected! Here’s a current shot that I cut into a section of the wall. It helps to see the new color next to the old color. Very hot!

And now the final results! I can’t believe how much bigger the space looks without stripes on the walls!

I couldn’t be happier with how the color turned out! It’s a perfect mix of warm and cool depending on the lighting. It’s actually quite neutral!

Safe to say, I think it’s more than worth it! Presence provides the perfect neutral backdrop for any future updates I may make to this room. I’m so excited about the decorating freedom I have in this space now that the stripes are gone!

In the coming weeks, I’ll be looking for light garment updates. Now that I can start using striped fabric in this room, it’s likely to be added. Scratches don’t last forever in this place!

Thanks to Dutch Boy Paints for working with me on this site and inspiring me to paint these stripes!
