If you are a regular user of our website and appreciate what we do, please consider a small donation to help cover our costs. Last week we learned about measurements, significant zeros, reading graduated cylinders and much more. We started with a POGIL called “Significant Figures and Measurements,” which includes an introduction to valid and invalid measurements and significant figures. For these POGILs, we got to work with new table groups and help each other out, and I think that was more than any icebreaker we could have done, because we immediately worked together, shared ideas, and shared everything. Below is a picture of the worksheet.
The second POGIL is called “Significant Zeros” and specifies what a significant zero is, what a surrogate zero is, and gives us five rules for determining what is significant and what is not. At the end of the set, we covered scientific notation, extended notation, and how to write numbers in each form. I’m still trying to figure out which numbers are important and which are placeholders. Below is a picture of the package.
Then we learned how to read graduated cylinders. Dr. Finan asked seven different filled cylinders to be filled with different colored liquids, read them all and compare their answers. It was interesting because the increments were different so most of the time you could guess and it was nice to see that everyone had their own idea of how full the graduated cylinder was.
It was hard for a lot of people to understand and the exercises were challenging but really helped everyone so we ended the week with more exercises in meaningful numbers.
