In these centers, students learn about sound waves, pick up a phone, plot different waves, shake a model, learn about ocean waves, and learn about transverse and longitudinal waves. Emphasis is on NGSS 4-LS1.A and D.

There are many stations below to learn how sound waves work. One or more of these stations is a useful review later when introducing the biology of hearing sounds, included in the Structure and Function Science Stations. On the other hand, if you have already taught the biology of sound reception, you may want to review with the students the effect of sound waves when they are captured by the ear.

The science stations are designed to last about 20 minutes each. Students can do one day for 8 days or 2 days for four days. The tables below will help you organize the servers.

The word cards are available in two formats, a three page card with pictures and a full page card with the word and description. The full page flashcards are great for a science word wall.

The three cards can be used as the ninth field of science or the first field of elimination. Cut up the cards and ask students to match the word, description and picture. Extend the learning and have students record some of the words in their science notebooks.

Video games are so much fun! In these centers, students participate in a video game or game show. Like the observation deck, two video games have been installed: one focuses on sound, pitch, and vibration, the other on building a xylophone with glass bowls.

In the Investigate stage, students make phone calls and investigate which types of devices produce the best sound. This center meets the DCI standard, “Different solutions should be tried to determine which best solves the problem, given criteria and constraints.”

There is optional reading to build background knowledge, a guide, a worksheet, and a variety of questions to explore the concepts of the field.

This is a fun and engaging site where students can draw wave heights and learn about wavelengths and wavelengths. Students use string and a slinky to represent different waves.

At this station the students take a break from testing and read a passage about ocean waves and answer questions about the passage.

Below is a sample of the multiple choice worksheets at each station. Students will use their science journals to answer the questions.
